Tim is a senior clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator in the field of diabetes and endocrinology. He is currently a Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Canberra Hospital and the immediate past Head of Department.

Tim did his undergraduate medical studies at the University of Sydney and trained in endocrinology at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He completed a doctorate in type 2 diabetes in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney.

For many years Tim held the positions of Director of Clinical Endocrinology and Head of the Diabetes Centre at the Royal Hobart Hospital and he remains an Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Tasmania. Tim has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and basic and clinical research for over 30 years. He was involved in developing the undergraduate curriculum in endocrinology for the Tasmanian Medical School and continue to prepare and deliver lectures and case-based tutorials there. Since his move to Canberra in 2016 to take up the position as Senior Medical Advisor for the Health Products Regulation group, Tim has been teaching undergraduate medical students at the Australian National University (ANU) and postgraduate medical officers at the Canberra Hospital. He has received numerous awards for teaching including a Teaching Merit Certificate from the University of Tasmania’s Vice Chancellor. In 2019 he was awarded the title of Physician Educator of the Year by Canberra Health Services. For many years Tim was the Tasmanian representative on the Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and responsible for developing the curriculum for Advanced Training in endocrinology at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Tim’s research interests include the pathophysiology of diabetic complications and their prevention. He has ongoing research collaboration with investigators at the Menzies School of Population Health at the University of Tasmania, Deakin University’s Faculty of Health and the University of Texas. His team’s research papers have won awards from the American Physiological Society, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.
